I do also agree that the fundemental role of a recruiter is picking up the phone and speaking to candidates and clients.
However do you not feel there is an ever increasing need to embrace the social media side of recruiting?
More and more users are responding to tweets, or facebook ads than ever before. In the beginning this was mostly those individuals who didn't have much else to do with their time - however now Apps and RSS feeds are much more a part of a professionals day? |

Well chaps I can see where you are coming from but I think you are wrong. I totally agree with you that the core fundamentals of recruitment won't change. However it is foolish to think social media is just a passing fad. Companies utilise our services as we are experts in our field. Just like print advertising, fax machines, email, electronic databases and all the technology developments that have come before, Social media is another tool we must learn to ensure we are able to harness the power of it for our customers benefit.
It's not something consultants should be spending hours doing, the same way I don't expect consultants to spend hours putting CV's on a database. However as a manager you should be thinking about these tools as they can give your consultants fantastic support in business development as well as being a huge (cheap) source of fresh applicants.

I agree with castlegr when he says
"quit mucking about with all their toys and gadgets and get on with recruiting."
But he thinks these are toys and gadgets.... we all own them, and we all use them for our benefit so very simply my point is
gimmicks may well wear thin as times goes on, but then there will only be new gimmicks to replace them, so if you choose not to embrace these things 'Wisely' when then there is nothing wrong with it, then it's clearly out of choice you are ignoring possible opportunities. Simple as that !.
Notice i said ' wisely ' ! |

Great thread! I've just joined Langton Howarth - a specialist scientific recruitment company in Leeds - as the head of digital. So it is my job to harness the potential of e-recruiting, social media and web 2.0 and hopefully help to attract clients and candidates on the web.
Since joining the company two-and-a-half weeks ago, it has become very clear that the meat and drink of what the business does takes place on the phones and my work online will serve to supplement that, rather than to replace it.
However, our website at http://www.langtonhowarth.co.uk is already a great source of business and I am confident that will only increase as the site develops and our web presence grows.
Social media channels will, I believe, vary wildly in their effectiveness. For example, I can't see myspace, bebo or hi5 creating any new leads for us, but LinkedIn is already a vital tool.
We have yet to become active on Facebook, but I am hopeful it will serve as a great tool for brand building and also for communicating with candidates.
I've read a few articles on the subject, such as this one (which is interesting, if a little out of date): http://nowsourcing.com/2008/09/03/facebook-for-recruiters/
