Hi Dominic,
Take the hourly pay rate, add 12.07% (for Holiday Pay), multiply by hours per week, say 40, take off £123 (tax free pay) then add 12.8% NIers to the result (sum above the tax free pay), then add back the £123, then divide the total by 40 for your hourly cost - then add your mark up to get the hourly charge for your Client.
Hope that helps. Tom. |

Thanks Tom,
However, what happens when we hit a bank holiday and the temp is entitled to the day off with pay?
Take for example December and January, we will hit three bank holidays, meaning three days we have to pay the temp – how would we bill the client so that we are not out of pocket?
For example, we have a temp working for us for the past month and looks like he will be working for us until the end of January.
Based on a 37.5 hour week, we make about £150 per week on him. His hourly rate of pay means he earns around £160 a day.
Should we have to pay him for the bank holidays over Christmas without somehow charging the client, we would be in effect losing three weeks revenue???!!
I appreciate your advice.
Dominic

Hi M,
For the past 10 years, I have focused on Perm recruitment, however, due to the current market conditions, my clients are opting for temporary solutions.
From your comment, you are suggesting I am approaching this from the wrong way?
Where can I find the standard contracts you refer to?
Kind regards,
Dominic

I'm not an expert on Temps as I work in a technical market and deal either with Contractors as Limited Companies or Contractors through Umbrella organisations. So this is not an issue that has ever come up or will ever come up for me personally.
However what I do know about temps is that they have to accumulate holiday. So it depends how long the temp has worked for you if you have to pay them for holidays or not. The rate a temp accumulates holiday I am not to sure on but its something like 1 holiday day every 10 or so working days.
Second thing is it depends on how your contract is written up but if your contract with the temp states that they are not employed to work on the bank holidays in question I dont see how they can expect holiday pay for a day they were not meant to work on anyway.
Not sure if you're a member of the REC but for an issue like this they have all the answers. |

Hi Dominc,
Richie is right.
Holiday Pay accumulates with time worked (not with time not worked) Hope that helps.
Provided it is clear in your terms (and on the Temps payslip) you can pay it weeky or accrue it until requested but do always include it when calculat6ing your costs (irespective of when you pay it out).
I've an old Temp contract that might be useful. I'll flick it over to your e mail soon if I can. Tom. |

M a temp won't be self employed (a ltd company contractor is not the same as a temp employed by an employment business) - please engage brain before posting useless, inane and unhelpful comments here.
I recently started doing temp recruitment Dominic and went through this quite extensively with the help of several people on here. Happy to pass that help on if you want to email me.
I have temp costings/calculations and spreadsheets to work out everything. |
