 Accounting software - any advice?

We have been using accounting software called MYOB (for "Mind Your Own Business"!) since starting up in 2002. We found it pretty good, and no real need to review our use of it came up till now, as MYOB has been bought by another supplier called Mamut and all MYOB users are being migrated over to Mamut.

Since we are being forced to change supplier anyway, now is the time to review other options and make sure we're not missing out on a great product somewhere else.

I'm curious to hear what systems others are using, what you think of them, any recommendations etc.

MYOB was client server based, but I like the sound of web-based systems like KashFlow, but not attached at this stage.

What about accounting packages specifically designed for the recruitment sector - are there any? what are they like?

One problem I had with MYOB for example is getting the salary and employers expenses (PAYE, NI etc.) for a temp to appear as a cost of sales rather than a fixed cost. Hopefully an accounting package for the recruitment sector would have ironed this stuff out already...

Hi,

We use Kashflow and I think its really good, especially for reporting etc, if you want to see how much temps has made compared to perms, or a specific product.
You can also record the source where the client came from, determine which consultants bring on more clients.

I know the owners and team at Kashflow, so if you want an accoutant to work alongside it let me know.

Hi Conner,

No erxperience with any that you mention above but until recently, I would have had no hestation in recommending Sage Line 50.

However, with recent upgrades there have been numerous problems and "help desk" has been a bit of an oxymoron.

Some previously useful features like a simple printout of credit controllers notes per debtor rather than per credit controller have disappeared made it a nonsense
for our busineass particularly as we export data from it to ywo other systems and data locations had been changed without us being informed.

Line 100 has been discontinued. We are told Line 200 does not have the same problems. However, I would steer you away from Sage Line 50. Tom

thanks Rich & Tom,

called up KashFlow with one or two presales type questions:
below are my notes

Q1) does KashFlow do payroll ?

No, but you can use an add-on site that is integrated with KashFlow, see the add-ons on the website.

I followed up and the first one charges £5.75 a mth (£69) for up to 5 employees, and £1 each a month thereafter.

Another is about £11/week, another has a free version and a premium version (£60 pa).

So yes, but not as easy as doing it from the same app.

Q) can KashFlow do multi-currency?

yes, but can only have £ bank accounts
(won't work because we have € accounts in UK for our business with RoI/europe)

= so that's KashFlow ruled out :-(
oh, and Sage also, as I'll take your advice on that one Tom ;-)

Microsoft Accounting!

Cheap, multi user, multi currency, payroll. dotnet, sql.

Download free for a trial, will also import from various packages - don't know about MYOB though.

What online accounting software is available? I manage branch offices in 5 different countries and all use different currencies. If I could get an online system that would allow each office to input figures and consolidate all the accounts I would be over the moon

try Fusion Accounts, by Stiona software, here in Belfast

we've looked at their solution and its missing one add-on that we need, however it might do what you need it too (as everyone has differing requirements)

Thanks for the mention Conor,

We can provide consolidated accounts and as Conor mentioned we support Foreign Trading.

Fusion Accounts also supports businesses that are VAT registered in multiple countries.

@ Conor & On The Same Topic

I think you both may consider Quickbooks a good option, Quickbooks offers the option to work with multiple currencies it also has a payroll package. However, it's not an online system but I'm sure it will do the job.
