Quick question, I have recently started my own business and was able to basically transfer all my clients over. So far things are ticking along ok but it seems more of a life business at the moment as I am not expanding.

I will be the first to admit that although my recruitment skills a excellent (I am basically a headhunter) my business development skills are pretty crap. I have always been employed as an account manager and had no real sales experience.

I therefore need to employ a BDM to handle the growth side.
I have been in recruitment for a while and most of the BDM's I have worked with didnt seem to justify their wage, in all honesty I reckon they were overpaid.

How does one go about then finding a BDM who will produce and actually be worth the money you spend on them and what sort of package would be good enough to attract said person?

Hi Craig. Interesting that you separate out HH skills from BDev.

In what ways are they different?

HH is finding the candidates and Bdev is finding the vacancy

When you say you were able to transfer all 'your' clients over without a problem do you mean the clients you stole from your last company? I presume you didn't win those accounts? And if you did then whats the problem, you've won the business once so do it again. Or are you (as i suspect) a naughty little tea leaf?

Did you steal them from Pink Personnel? Or as it says on your Linkedin profile 'Pink Personal', change your profile you goon it sounds like you used to work for an escort agency!

Craig - if you are a HH then you are accustomed to selling. You have to sell a role to candidates.
Don't you have faith in your ability to sell to clients?

My advice would be to get yourself on a course or take someone on for a 3 month contract to train you.

You will need to understand BD in order to recruit and train new people within the team. Not sure I'd have confidence in an Owner/Director if they couldn't get on the phone and sell their product.

Thanks Liz I might do, new clients always seem to come to me from referals, so I have never really had to cold call or anything.

I get the idea that selling a job to a candidate is similar to selling yourself to a client, but I think I just lack the confidence.

Why not get a telemarketer to do your cold calling and when you get leads, follow them up and they would already be aware of your company etc.
You can use a telemarketing company or advertise for a freelance.

The really ironic thing here is that sourcing vacancies on a contingency basis from companies hardly involves any selling whatsoever.

Mitch are you saying that any agency can ring up a company in the throes of a recruitment campaign and get money straight away? I find that hard to believe.

Hi Craig, there is some good advice on here. A course is a winner if you can free the time, hiring someone on a temp basis to train you and bring in revenue is another cracker.

You could as has been suggested look at the telemarketing companies out there. some of them are relatively cost effective and prove good results.

you could also look at hiring an appointment booker and you go to the client explaining exactly what you can do, yes it's selling but you clearly stated you are a great HH so emphasise that.

Good luck fella

No that's not what I'm saying Craig.

What I'm saying is that getting vacancies on a contingency basis has more to do with persistence and luck than it does with selling.

It's one of the areas where recruiters delude themselves that they are good salespeople ...just because they can raise a couple of vacancies every day.

Craig, sorry ...I didn't read your post properly.

Yes, it is possible to ring a company in the middle of a recruitment campaign and get money straight away.

Hi Craig, congratulations on starting up your new business, I do remember you telling me about 18 months ago that the owner of the company had passed away and you were unsure as to what to do. If you do want to consider your options and would perhaps consider looking at going in to a partnership or amalgamating your business with a larger group, please let me know as I have a client in mind. Otherwise, there are some good suggestions on here, you just need to decide what is best for you!
Take care, Louise
