Hi All

I have been trying to get Employing Now more and more popular for just over a year. I'm working with a really tight budget and the site is free to use so generates little if any income each month. The aim was and still is to keep the site free for any one wanting to post jobs. I have tried and tried but don't really understand why no one seems to be posting jobs. OK you could say many people probably don't know the site even exists and with my marketing budget they probably don't. But I have had several recruitment companies join the site through Idibu. For a while they have posted jobs but then stopped. I have considered they didn't get any response but EN is free so why would they not continue? My understanding of Idibu and similar systems is they write the job out once and click who they want it to be posted to. If all they have to do is click I would have thought posting to a free job board especially in these times is great.

Any ideas how I can get more jobs on the site? I'm doing what I can to get candidates to sign up. Considering millions are without a job the amount of people signing up is useless but I'm working on that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

James

There are a few free job boards, never had any success off any of them. You might want to try target getting candidates from specific sectors and make yourself niche. That way you will get a better response from agencies.

I haven't tried your particular job board James, but in my experience of other free boards, the quality (and relevance) of the applicants tends to be so poor that I usually end up blocking them from my inbox. Is this something that might apply to your board? It isn't just cost that keeps people posting, it's relevance, ease of use and lack of hassle. Also, even free boards require a time expenditure to post on them - so if they don't pay off we won't spend the time.

On your home page, the lovely link that takes you to advertise a vacancy has even lovelier credit card logo's above it, not really screaming out FREE is it. Maybe if you removed the credit cards and displayed a free job ads logo you might get more success. Just a thought.

James

There's a few things which you could improve on the site. As Jim has mentioned there's credit card logos on the home page which implies that it costs to post. Yet when I click the link it takes me straight to the page to add a job but doesn't tell me whether it's free or not.

The FAQ pages are really confusing and one doesn't work. I can't find out anything about how the site works or costs. How long will a job be advertised for? How much does it cost? What discounts do you do for multiple postings.

The other thing is the quality of the jobs on there. I found one which linked to a site offering envelope stuffing jobs in Australia. There is a network out there which offers job ads which you can add to your database. I can't remember the name but it's worth researching.

It doesn't look like you're publishing your jobs to the search engines such as Indeed or SimplyHired. They won't guarantee quality but they're free which is always good for the budget.

Even with free jobs by the multi-posters then you need to be able to deliver quality candidates. It might be that the recruiters got no response. Even worse, they may have got thousands of irrelevant candidates and decided against posting again.

You need to spin things round and ask yourself two questions. Firstly, imagine yourself as a jobseeker. What are you going to find on EmployingNow which isn't on TotalJobs/Monster/Jobserve? Why is applying through EmployingNow better/quicker/easier?

Secondly, consider it from a recruiter's point of view. They're keen to find the right candidates for the clients. Given that they'll get roughly 10-15% for placing a successful candidate they're not adverse to spending a bit of cash to get the right people but free is always good. They don't want, twenty average candidates, they definitely don't want a hundred bad ones, they want four or five excellent ones. What does EmployingNow offer that makes that happen?

Thanks for the replies, I wanted to wait a day or two before I replied to them to see what else came in.

I must admit I am probably a bit naive with regard to successful recruitment. I guess we all have to start somewhere and hopefully I will get there in the end. One of the biggest mistakes that I have made here is to assume that the candidates will be vetted by the recruitment company that they apply to. It seems from what I have read here that is not how it should be. I thought that is how Monster and the other big job boards operated. I do want to be different though so I will start to take more of an active roll in making sure the candidates are up to standard. Seeing as I am in confession here there are not that many people joining the site. So hopefully bad candidate applications has not been a big issue.

I will contact each candidate that has joined the site asking them if they are still looking for a job advising if they are not I will put their status on the site as not currently looking. I will also take more of an active roll in communicating with the job seekers.

Ever since starting this job board I have wanted to remove the credit card symbols. I totally agree that they don't make the site look free, far from it. The problem there is I don't own the source files for the software, I need to purchase them but don't have the funds at the moment. There are certain points of the site that I can change with the access that I have but a lot that I cant. I really want to change a lot of it.

I will contact the company that run the hosting and the software and ask them to remove the credit card icons. Normally they charge to carry out work, fingers crossed they will do this for free. I cant see that its that much work to remove this image. May even replace with a free one but don't want the site to look tacky.

I need to look further into Indeed and SimplyHired, not seen these sites before.

With regard to the FAQ's I asked a friend to write these for me. Big mistake. I will start to re-write them now. Should be on the site within the next 24 hours.

Thank to each of you for taking the time to help me out.

James

Whilst wishing James all the very best, this thread demonstrates that sucess in job boards is not easy. The assumption that anyone can launch a job board is at best lazy. There's no such thing as easy money, whilst good reasearch, hard work, dedication, expertise and experience remain constant ingredients of a successful business.
