I was recently walking along the promenade at Blackpool beach on a "gentleman's weekend of music and dance" when I witnessed strategy in action. The sun was shining and I noticed a guy carrying two bags who was approaching the sunbathers and selling various brands of "genuine fake" sunglasses. The beach was teeming and trade was good.

As often happens with the great British weather a rain cloud appeared and the temperature dropped a few degrees. Undeterred, our entrepreneurial businessman put down one bag and opened the other as the first drops of rain started to fall. He quickly struck up a great trade selling his new line of "designer" umbrellas and ponchos. The message for me was simple. Rather than complaining about lost trade due to changing conditions which rendered his offering redundant he recognized the new market and its opportunities instantly , had planned ahead and was not afraid to change his business model when it was most needed.

In order to make the most of the current market we need to apply the same positive thinking and actively seek out opportunities rather than dwell in our hard luck and misfortune.

Good luck out there

What are the "recessionary" opportunities? Your views please.

I've been saying that recruitment agencies have to adapt their service offering for ages and ages now. I mean seriously ...there is so much more that agencies can be selling than just candidate CVs.

When I describe some of these agencies as behaving like rabbits stuck in oncoming car headlights or like headless chickens, they think I'm just being mean.
