Are you just coming out of hibernation? The way you have started the thread seems like you are not aware of what's been going on in the market.

I think this recession offers recruiters lots of opportunities to win better quality business and position themselves strongly for when the market picks up again. The key is to set yourselves apart from your competitors and win more of their share of the market. That can't be done by you just doing more of the same old thing you've always done in the past.

Basically you need to adapt and broaden what it is you offer your clients.

If you don't even know what that means, then the likelihood is that you'll be one of those that fall by the wayside.

Whatever happens, good luck.

Actually I've just come back from 18 months volunteering work in third-world countries.

And I have heard a few chatters and not been access to news and been going online every few months.

Finding the UK market very hard to even have any sort of a chance in setting up a business.

So you can say I have been in hibernation.

PS - It's looking bleek in setting up a new business

it must be said that those are adopting a reactive approach will fall by the wayside, or at least suffer.

to prosper, businesses need to have a proactive, strategic approach.

the downturn gives you time to rearchitect your processes, stockpile top candidates and more.

Hi Guys,
Wish you hadn't asked but this is what Hayes said in a press release today

One in five recruiters will go to the wall in the next two years, according to Hays’ finance director Paul Venables

Speaking after Hays released its latest interim management statement, Venables said: “My expectation is that we will see 20% of companies disappear in the next two years.”

Venables continued: “In the perm market there are more than 10,000 registered companies in the UK, and including those who are not registered that is a massive amount of companies, and a lot of those small one will really be hurting now. If you are in a niche area or in perm market place you are going to struggle.”

Venable said this was a UK view, but it was the same in all the large economies.

Venables added: “All the big players will do well and come out in a strong position.”

Just show 'em what the small guys can do and see you next year. Happy Easter. Tom

Couldn't have said it better myself - the utter b*llocks bit that is. I have heard nothing but bad news about larger agencies around here - they're closing or making redundancies left right and centre. They have major overheads that a lot of small, niche agencies don't have. I could in theory keep my business afloat on £2k a month. Hays, Reed or any of the other big boys couldn't keep one Consultant afloat on that.

I'm actually not sure it's all about size, but it is about adaptability. The Consultants who think outside the box, focus heavily on service and added value will retain existing clients, pick up new ones (from the agencies that are closing) and be in a good position once this is all over.

I concur wholeheartedly with Liz and Mitch regarding the 'testicular nature' of the statement by Hays. Recruitment is all about one thing and one thing alone - Filling jobs. One consultant can do this on their own or within a big agency, but the guys who are on their own have an advantage in such economic conditions in that they can negotiate fees to whatever level they like, whilst the guys working in big agencies have to go running to their director who's less likely to be as flexible and negotiate owing to his main priority being the achievement of the growth targets he set out in last years budget, which he wrote in a less economically challenging market, with the aim of world domination.

We're recruiters, lets remember what we are here to do - Fill jobs. Leave the world domination to the bankers, things that rhyme with bankers but start with a 'W' and whilst were on the point....MP's

Size doesn't matter....filling jobs on the other hand does.

I understand some of what Hays are saying in that a business like Hays (as with other larger players) are cross functional both in terms of geography, seniority and job functionality. Yes whilst you will have attrition from those companies, you'll see that that's part and parcel of what needs to be done in order to manage cost base and turn out profit. For example if you are small retail recruiter recruiting staff on the south coast then you are much more likely to struggle in the current market if that's the only thing you do and the only area in which you are deriding you net income. (yes there will be exceptions - but certainly not the rule) It's more likely that bigger and more cash rich companies will have the capacity to make long term profit by pooling together the cashflow from stronger and more buoyant areas of their business.

I too agree with the 'quality' of the statement by Hays FD. The nature of UK recruitment is that the majority of the market is made by the independents. Hays has been suffering during the recession. His talk about the big players being best placed to deal with the recession is misguided. He's predicted 20% of recruiters leaving the market over the next two years yet Hays has cut it's UK headcount by 27% over the past year alone and said they plan to reduce numbers further. Hay's fee income has dropped by 37%.

I think we're going to see a big change in the market over the next few years and I think smaller, specialist independents are going to play a large part in that.
